Located on King Street, Mellow Mushroom is a classic pizza joint that always delivers a quality product. It’s a great place to gather with friends, and the Tastemakers were lucky enough to get together on their patio. With over 10 specialty pies to choose from, there is something to please even the pickiest foodie.
The Tastemakers began our journey into the cosmos with a Greek salad. Starting with a healthy plate of vegetables is the best way to begin a night of pizza with friends. All of their salads are big enough to share, and this one was no exception.
The Greek salad includes all the best vegetables like red onions, cucumbers, green peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, banana peppers, and kalamata olives. It’s topped with creamy feta cheese and Mellow Mushroom’s signature Esperanza dressing.
After filling our bellies with something healthy, it was time to dive into the carbs. The pretzel bites are little pieces of cosmic heaven. Soft, yet composed into a perfect doughy ball, these bites are tossed in parmesan cheese and ready for dipping in one of the two sauces. This signature Mellow dough is best with the Pabst Blue Ribbon™ beer cheese dip, but it also comes with marinara sauce.
As amazing as the starters were, it was time for a refill, Mellow Mushroom carries great local brews on draft, and the main event – pizza. Mellow Mushroom brought three unique pizzas for the Tastemakers to try. The first pie was a classic, the Kosmic Karma. This red sauce based pizza is topped with feta cheese, mozzarella, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and roma tomatoes and finished with a signature pesto swirl. Each bite is like a little slice of Italy.
The next pizza was the House Special. It’s another red sauce based pizza with mozzarella, but it is topped with all the delicious meats including pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham, and applewood smoked bacon. It’s not all meat though. This pie is also topped with black olives, roma tomatoes, green peppers, and onions. Then, for good measure, it’s topped with extra mozzarella. This is the definition of a perfect pizza.
And, finally, probably the most unique and unusual pie of the bunch. The Thai Dye Pizza is an olive oil and garlic base with roma tomatoes and onions. This is all topped with fresh basil, cucumbers, curry tofu and a sweet swirl of Thai chili sauce.
