Hotel Bella Grace
By Emma Waugh, @GirlEatsCharleston
It is no secret that Charleston is known for its hospitality. As a local, I love that I can still enjoy the feel of a boutique hotel without actually staying there, as many of them feature bars or restaurants for everyone to enjoy.
A prime example of this: connected to the sleek and modern Hotel Bella Grace building is the historic Delaney House, a classic Charleston single complete with a piazza entrance. This is where Hotel Bella Grace guests, and now the public, can pop in for a bite to eat and a cocktail. The Tastemakers crew recently had the pleasure of doing just that, as we gathered in the colorful upstairs lounge to enjoy a spread of small plates and libations.
The happy hour cocktail menu rotates seasonally, and this particular selection had me ready for warmer weather. Highlights included the crisp citrusy Something Social, smoky mezcal Negroni, and classic Bees Knees. Once springtime rolls around I could definitely see myself sipping these outside on the porch.
Then the food started to arrive! To start we had roasted red pepper hummus with cucumbers and za’atar lavash crisps for dipping, as well as a spinach artichoke dip made with goat cheese.
The dips were followed by two flatbreads - the Caprese with tomato, basil, and mozzarella, and the Garlic Pesto Chicken. All the dishes were tasty and perfect for a light snack during happy hour.
The icing on the cake, so to speak, was the dessert! The group attacked a slice of caramel chocolate cheesecake with spoons, and it did not last long. The desserts, like the cocktails, rotate seasonally. I would not be upset if they decided to keep this cheesecake as a permanent fixture on the menu.
The best part of the whole evening was learning that Hotel Bella Grace will be donating $1 for every menu item sold, from now until February 14, to the Center for Women in Charleston. Don’t miss out on a chance to eat and drink for a good cause!
