Holy City Brewing

By Presley Mullinax, Account Executive: CharlotteBergerPR

There is nothing our Tastemakers crew loves more than a good vibe, refreshing beer and mouthwatering food. A couple of weeks ago, we gathered at Holy City Brewing- which is raising the bar for Charleston’s beer scene with their new brewery in Park Circle- complete with a full bar, taproom, a large heated patio space and stellar bites. No, really! We think they’ve established new standards for pub food in the Lowcountry.

First, their charismatic staff got the beers flowing. I wanted a sour and went with the Pedishaw- a smooth Sour Berliner Weisse. Then, we embarked on a tour of their 20,000 sq. ft. space led by Owner/Production Manager Chris Brown, which was loaded with details of their top-of-the-line brewing equipment, a four-vessel thirteen-barrel system, a sophisticated lab dedicated to sour beer (my personal favorite), canning production, and their beautiful fermentation room.

Brewmaster Chris gave us the complete rundown of the brewing process and helped us work up quite the appetite while absorbing as much beer knowledge as we possibly could. We ended the tour on their patio with some of their must-try house-made cocktails and a delicious spread. Naturally, everyone went to the Collision Fries first, hand-cut and smothered in beer cheese, cheddar jack, ranch, salt and scallions.

We also devoured the Honey Sambal, Nashville Hot and Carolina Gold Smoked Wings, the Holy City Burger, the HCB Gyro and a Lo Boy sandwich. $1 from every Lo Boy (old bay saltine fried SC shrimp, spicy citrus slaw, cherry tomatoes and chili dust on a toasted benne seed roll) sold for the month of March will be donated to our charity partner, Charleston Water Keeper, which protects and restores our local waterways to alleviate fears of pollution and to protect marine life.
