Charleston Waterkeeper

Founded in 2009, Charleston Waterkeeper focuses on water protection and restoration in the Charleston area, so people can swim and fish without worrying about pollution. Their team defines themselves as three things- “watchdogs, defenders and stewards”.

Watchdogs: Charleston Waterkeeper monitors pollution by testing waterways for bacteria level spikes, recruiting “creek watchers” who keep an eye on the status of nearby bodies of water, and investigating cases of pollution to help ensure polluters are held accountable.

Defenders: Charleston Waterkeeper stays in the know with what local companies and towns are doing. They assess how their actions and mandates may be harmful to the waterways and challenge them when they see wrongdoing, going as far as taking violators to court.

Stewards: Through Charleston Waterkeeper’s Environmental Education Program, community members are inspired, educated and trained, creating volunteers and knowledgeable citizens who, together, help monitor and ensure the quality of local waterways. They also prevent instances of pollution by providing a free Mobile Pumpout Service to locals boaters who need their sanitary tanks dumped.

As part of our Charity Partnership Program, $1 from every Lo Boy sold at Holy City Brewing from Feb. 18-March 18 and $1 from every Crispy Fish Sandwich sold at Wiki Wiki Sand Bar from Feb. 26- March 26 will be donated to Charleston Waterkeeper!
