The Green Heart Project
We are honored to partner with The Green Heart Project, a Charleston nonprofit that provides urban farm-based experiential learning projects and school garden programs to educate students through growing, eating and celebrating food. The organization started in 2009 as a small school garden at a Title-I public elementary school in downtown Charleston with the intention of reconnecting its students with fresh, locally-grown produce. Today The Green Heart Project partners with 11 schools at eight different garden sites including their headquarters, the Urban Farm at Enston Home. They also assist an additional four school and community partners with their own garden efforts.
Research has shown that student learning in school gardens has a direct positive impact on motivation and enthusiasm for learning, scientific understanding and skills, and standardized test scores/GPA, as well as confidence and self-esteem.
During the months of July-October, we were so thankful to have support from our restaurant partners - Community Table, Basic Kitchen, Post House and Jon Smith Subs - to raise awareness and funds for The Green Heart Project through our charity giveback program. During this time, The Green Heart Project also partnered with the Dreamboats fundraising initiative at Basic Kitchen and Post House, which raised an additional $30,000 for the organization. Basic Projects Owner Ben Towill and Basic Kitchen Executive Chef Charlie Layton will be taking on the incredible challenge of rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean this December.
