Boxcar Betty's
By Elise Devoe, Cookin’ With Booze
Boxcar Betty’s is a Charleston staple for a reason. They are home to some of the best fried chicken sandwiches in the area and the sides that go with them are off the charts delicious! We were lucky enough to go in and sample Boxcar’s fried delights at their Mount Pleasant location and we were all very happy campers by the end of the evening!
I’m going to go ahead and say it, Boxcar Betty’s has the best sweet potato fries in the area. They’re perfectly crispy and seasoned with the perfect mix of salt and sugar for a sweet and savory bite! They’re simply addicting and the perfect complement to their slightly spicy sandwich.
Boxcar Betty’s knows that the best way to enjoy vegetables is deep-fried with a light and crispy batter. We enjoyed their fried green tomatoes and fried pickles with a variety of dipping sauces. The fried pickles dipped in the sweet chili sauce was my personal favorite combo!
Boxcar keeps it simple with three signature sandwiches on the menu, but they do them all exceptionally well. Each sandwich comes with a choice of fried or grilled chicken, or for vegetarians you can sub a pimento stuffed portobello mushroom. The Chicken “Not So Waffle” is a play on chicken and waffles featuring bacon jam, maple syrup, pimento cheese, and tomato. Just like the sweet potato fries, it walks the tight rope between salty and sweet in the most delicious way!
Their signature sandwich and my personal favorite is the Boxcar, topped with pimento cheese, peach slaw, housemade pickles, and spicy mayo. All of us at the table were practically fighting over the Boxcars because they are that good! I have declared the Boxcar as my favorite fried chicken sandwich in Charleston, so go ahead and try it so you can decide for yourself! To encourage you even more to try to Boxcar, $1 from each sandwich with benefit Amor Healing Kitchen between now and February 23rd at any of their locations!
