Poe's Tavern

Recently, I had the opportunity to be a part of Tastemakers Charleston, and Poe's Tavern hosted us. I have been to Poe's many times since we moved to the Charleston area, but going with Tastemaker's was such a different experience. Almost every time we go to Poe's, I order the same basic thing, but the Tastemaker's event introduced me to dishes that I wouldn't have ordered otherwise. This serves as a reminder that I need to get out of my food comfort zone more often because I had the opportunity to try so many delicious dishes!
First up, we were served appetizers of Tortilla Chips + Pico de Gallo and Edgar's Nachos (Red & White Corn Tortilla Chips, Edgar’s Drunken Chili, Monterey Jack, Pico De Gallo, Guacamole, Chipotle Sour Cream, Jalapenos & Scallions). The nachos were delicious and definitely shareable with 3-4 people, AND for every order of Edgar's Nachos sold at Poe's for the month, $1 was donated to Going Places, a charity that provides bikes to disadvantaged children in the Charleston area. Thanks to all you hungry diners, $792 was raised!
Another appetizer (my personal favorite) was the Shrimp & Chorizo Quesadilla. All of the flavors blended together so well, and I could've easily eaten the whole thing. If you add a side of fries or a side salad, it's enough for a full meal. This quesadilla wasn't something I would have ever ordered, but I am so happy I had a chance to taste it.
Poe's is best known for it's burgers, and they certainly don't disappoint. We tried the Tell-Tale Heart (Fried Egg, Applewood Bacon & Cheddar Cheese) and The Sleeper (Roasted Garlic Bleu Cheese & Buffalo Fried Shrimp). Both of them were yummy, but the Sleeper was my favorite. I LOVE buffalo anything (a new love, actually) and the roasted garlic bleu cheese added such a great flavor element, and I don't even like bleu cheese normally!
In addition to burgers, Poe's served us some of their top sandwiches and tacos. The Annabel Lee was my personal favorite (Charleston Style Crabcake topped with Fresh Vegetable Remoulade Sauce.) No joke, y'all—this was one of the best crabcakes I've ever tasted! The seasonings were perfect, and the crab cake wasn't fried too crispy. I HIGHLY recommend ordering the Annabel Lee. We also sampled the Buffalo Shrimp Tacos (Bacon-Bleu Cheese Cole Slaw & Pico de Gallo). Like I said, I love anything with buffalo sauce, and these tacos were one of my favorite dishes that I tried! The Mahi Mahi sandwich was also fresh and delicious with an awesome aioli!
All of the burgers and sandwiches come with hand-cut french fries, potato salad, or marinated bleu-cheese cold slaw. For a little extra, you can substitute onion strings, loaded fries, or a side salad. All of the sides are yummy, so you really can't go wrong, but the onion strings were really tasty!
