Melvin’s Barbecue has been a cornerstone of the Carolina barbecue scene since 1982, and for good reason. From the moment we stepped through their welcoming doors, the aroma of Melvin’s original mustard-based barbecue sauce signaled we were in for a treat.

We were treated to an assortment of slow-cooked meats, each crafted with Melvin’s original sauces and seasonings. The Pulled Pork, bathed in the signature Golden Secret Sauce, was tender and flavorful, while the Prime Brisket boasted a smoky finish. The highlight for us was the Rack of Spare Ribs, cooked to perfection with meat that fell effortlessly off the bone.

Of course, no barbecue experience is complete without sides, and Melvin’s sides were not to be missed. We sampled their Fresh Collard Greens, Homemade Mac N’ Cheese, Sweet Potato Soufflé, BBQ Baked Beans and plenty more. Each side was well seasoned and cooked with plenty of love, just the way Mimi would make them.

The cream of the crop was, of course, the giveback item, the Little Joe, a tender pulled pork sandwich smothered in their original tangy Golden Secret Sauce. The Little Joe was big in flavor and even bigger in impact: $1 from each purchase supports Water Mission, a nonprofit organization providing sustainable water solutions to communities in need.

We couldn’t leave without a taste of Betty Bessinger’s Banana Pudding. Creamy, sweet and downright addictive, it left us full as a tick, but longing for just one more spoonful.
