Ruby Sunshine

Anyone who lives in Charleston is no stranger to brunch. But there is a new morning spot downtown, and we’re pretty sure that no one has experienced brunch quite like this before in the Holy City. Ruby Sunshine recently opened its doors on East Bay Street and has brought the flavors and spirit of The Big Easy with it. They are the sister restaurant to the original Ruby Slipper Cafe in New Orleans, which opened in 2008 with the goal of being a gathering place for the community as it continued to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.
The Tastemakers crew was lucky enough to try some selections from Ruby Sunshine’s Spring Specials menu. We dove headfirst into Blueberry Lemon Stuffed French Toast with almond cheesecake and blueberry compote filling, as well as some sinful Fried Green Tomatoes.
We savored plates of sugar spiked Beignets with lemon curd, whipped cream and Mardi Gras sprinkles, as well as a Crawfish Cake Benedict topped with a corn maque choux that it’s safe to say we are all still craving.
If there is one thing just as craveable as Ruby Sunshine’s food, it has to be their cocktail menu. A favorite among the group was the Mambo 75, made with gin, lavender syrup and sparkling wine. We also sipped the Morning Margarita, made with tequila blanco and seasonal juice. Mimosa lovers had their day made with the Mimosa Flight, a set of four sparkling wine cocktails. This season’s selections included the Mambo 75, Blue Orange, Peach Bellini and Blueberry.
Our charity partner for this event was The Formation Project, a survivor-led nonprofit dedicated to fighting human trafficking in the Lowcountry. Through the end of March, $1 from every Mimosa flight sold at Ruby Sunshine will go directly to their incredible mission.
