MESU

By Marian Williams, @CharlestonFoodist

Sometimes you want tacos and sushi rolls and as it turns out you could actually get both of those dishes under the same roof.  Republic Development and Management Group’s, MESU won’t let you down. Charleston is home to many mixed cuisines, pulling from cultures across the globe and we have a tendency to mesh those cultures together. MESU is the only Mexican and sushi join you’ll find in Charleston. We were so excited to try out this newcomer to the culinary scene!

Anything you want from a chips and trio of dips and Edamame to Mexican Street Corn and Seaweed Salad, MESU’s menu has a plethora of offerings that are equally as impressive. As you walk into this establishment you can note it’s fun decor, and eclectic vibes – that clearly pull through to the food that they serve. We started out with appetizers and drinks. Let me tell you, I’ve never had a passion fruit frosé before but I will never pass it up again.

Next up I’m going to call “the procession of sushi rolls”, because one came and then another and then another and then another. Soon we had an entire table full of sushi rolls and if you’re anything like me this just looks like heaven. All of their sushi offerings are so different and equally delicious.

After sushi we all chose tacos to try; the one that I chose was the “chicken wing” taco. This was possibly the most delicious taco I have had in Charleston. A boneless fried piece of chicken, slathered in this delicious miso honey sauce, topped with an apple daikon slaw and cilantro lime dressing wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla blanket.

Are you drooling yet? We wrapped up the night with some caramel filled churros served in the cutest sugar skull bowls, perfect for dipping in chocolate sauce.

Would we recommend MESU? I think that is a resounding yes from all of us here at the Tastemakers. Make sure that you check out MESU before March 27 because $1 from every churro order sold will go to Lowcountry Orphan Relief- an organization that provides support services and programs to meet the needs  of children identified as at-risk or suffering from abandonment, abuse and/or neglect.
