MILLERS ALL DAY
By Libby Williams, @PlateSouth
I’m not gonna lie to you…right now there are a lot of breakfast spots popping up. And you know what….I ain’t mad about it either. Because – let’s face it – BREAKFAST IS THE BESTEST.
If you want to argue with me, we can do it over waffles at Millers All Day. M-kay? I’ll meet you there. Really. I’ll be waiting. Under all the waffles. And unicorn grits.
When Millers opened last month, the buzz was big. Everywhere I went, friends and strangers were talking about their waffles and sweet rolls and and cocktails…and then came the Unicorn Grits and social media proceeded to go insane. So naturally, I had to check this all out for myself. I am not one to miss any insanity after all. And of course, I went with my favorite foodie friends – TastemakersCHS!
Honestly, this place was a winner from the get-go. With restaurateur and chef Nathan Thurston, miller and farmer Greg Johnsman, coupled with the mad skills of Executive Chef Madison Tessener all at the helm of this ship, Millers was destined for greatness from the very start.
The attention to detail at Millers is amazing. Locally sourced produce. Small batch grains. Incredible craft cocktails. Every dish is not impeccably delicious and well-thought out. Let’s look at the waffles, for an example. Perfectly crispy and light served with bananas, gently popped sorghum (that’s right…not popcorn. SORGHUM), caramel, and melt in your mouth meringue. It’s a one way ticket to foodie heaven. Just like everything here.
Since we went for happy hour, we ate a few options off their happy hour menu. One of the highlights for me were the corndogs with house made mustard. The were so good… everything you want from a corn dog and nothing you’ve ever had.
Another not-to-be-missed item on their Happy Hour Menu is the Bacon Jacks – a sort of elevated dish of housemade cracker jacks with bacon. A sticky and savory treat with popcorn, caramel, peanuts…and, you guessed it, bacon. Yes. Freaking. Please.
While you can get your fill of pancakes, grits bowls, eggs cooked any way, and a chicken biscuit that made me see angels, Millers also has a substantial menu that fills all the holes in your belly. So breakfast is just one reason to go. Strata, fried oysters, patty melts and even chicken salad sandwiches are all part of what makes this place somewhere you will keep coming back to – no matter what time of day it is.
Fried Oysters with house made chips…YASSS
The Chicken Biscuit.
Also know that if you are pressed for time or just want to come in and grab something to go, they have a bakery counter with all the most amazing treats. Cookies. Cakes. Scones. Muffins. And a coffee bar that always makes me want to linger a little bit.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the cocktails here – one of the best reasons to check this place out. Whether you are here for a leisurely brunch, a power lunch, or a festive early night with friends, you must try the cocktails. The popular Brunch Punch is a great way to start with Rum, Campari, Pineapple, Orange Juice, Lime, Ginger, and rounded out with Tiki Bitters. Also not to miss – their Bloody Marys and the don’t miss the Hot Coffee Cocktail with Bourbon, Vanilla Demerara Sugar, Coffee, and Maple Cream…a way to simultaneously wake you up and slow you down at the same time.
Coffee Cocktail…look at that cream drizzle.
Brunch Punch is always a good choice.
And don’t forget to round out your meal with the pie. ALL OF THE PIE. Holy moly. This is next level stuff people. NEXT LEVEL. Whether you go for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack – save room for the pie. Not just a slice of pie. Go with a friend and eat all of them. Or you do you and save them all for yourself. Trust me on this. Really.
There are so many reasons to make a trip to Millers. It’s a great weekend activity, a great weeknight early dinner, or a great gathering spot. Go for coffee. Or pie. Or a happy hour chat with a friend. Just get there.
And seriously…the waffles.
